Florida bathrooms and slick floors go together: humidity in the air, water on the tile, and bare feet. The fix is not bath mats (they bunch, they slide, they trip). The fix is a floor that grips.
Your options, honestly ranked
Textured porcelain tile is the best all-around choice — hard-wearing, beautiful, and available in finishes rated specifically for wet areas. Luxury vinyl plank or tile is warmer underfoot, softer if you do fall, and kinder to budgets; modern waterproof vinyl handles bathrooms well. Slip-resistant treatments etch microscopic texture into your existing tile — a good middle path when the tile is fine but too slick. What we do not recommend: peel-and-stick strips (they lift) and bath mats as a "solution" (they are a trip hazard with a non-slip label).
It is not just the material
Grout lines add grip, so smaller tiles can actually be safer than big slick ones. The transition from hallway to bathroom should be flush — lips and thresholds catch toes. And the shower floor needs its own slope and texture, separate from the bathroom floor. We plan all of it during the free visit.
Whole bathroom or just the shower?
If the budget is tight, start where water lands: the shower floor and the path from shower to door. That covers most falls. The full floor comes next. Either way, pair it with grab bars — grip underfoot plus something to hold is the combination that actually prevents falls. Our fall prevention guide explains why.
