Ask a physical therapist the single best shower safety upgrade and many will say: a seat. Standing through a whole shower on a wet floor, lifting one leg to wash a foot, turning around with soap in your eyes — sitting removes all of it at once.
Your three options
Fold-down wall seats are our most installed: they flip up flat against the wall when not needed, hold real weight when anchored to blocking, and look clean. Built-in benches (tiled or solid-surface) are the luxury choice — permanent, beautiful, and great for legroom in larger showers. Portable shower stools and chairs need no installation at all and work in any shower today; we will tell you honestly which models are stable and which wobble.
What "anchored right" means
A fold-down seat is only as strong as what it is screwed into. We mount to studs or solid blocking — never just tile and hope. If your shower walls are already finished and we cannot confirm blocking, we open a small section, add it, and patch invisibly. A seat that pulls out of the wall is worse than no seat.
Pair it with a handheld head
A seat without a handheld showerhead is half a solution — add both and seated showering actually works. Add grab bars for the sit-to-stand transition and you have covered the whole shower. See our walk-in showers if you are redesigning the space.
